Where the collection is kept, and kept running.

Restoration and detailing shops, climate-controlled storage and archive rooms for owners who work on their own cars or keep them for decades.

A working shop and a preservation room ask for opposite things. One wants air, power and a floor that forgives a dropped part. The other wants stillness: stable humidity, filtered air and as little light as possible.

Many collectors want both under one roof. They are designed as separate rooms with separate systems, sharing a wall rather than a thermostat.

The shop

  • A two-post lift, a workbench run and tool storage laid out around the way you work.
  • Compressed air piped to drops, 240-volt circuits for a welder and equipment, and task lighting at every bench.
  • A wash and detail bay with drainage, filtered water and lighting for paint correction.

Preservation

  • Humidity held steady near 50 percent, with dehumidification that runs independently of comfort cooling.
  • Filtered air, ultraviolet-free lighting and car covers stored where they are used.
  • Tenders and trickle chargers on monitored circuits, so a dead battery is a notification, not a surprise.

The archive

  • A fire-rated cabinet or room for titles, build sheets, service records and the documentation that sets an asset’s value.
  • Display for original parts, tools and automobilia that belong with the collection.

Often overlooked

Worth settling before anything is drawn.

  • Finishing work, paint booths and fuel storage are regulated in their own right. They are planned with the fire code in view, or kept out of the building.
  • Documentation is part of a car’s value. Records stored in a fire-rated room protect the price as much as the paperwork.
  • A sealed or coated floor that resists oil, brake fluid and coolant, chosen for the shop separately from the gallery floor.

Design is coordinated with the architect, engineers and designers suited to the project, whether you have engaged them already or would like introductions. An asset from the collection may be applied toward the work.
